jared was pissed off. why? because this stupid monster had been tailing him for three days, and it was a ruddy coward. every time it'd attack him, he'd take one swipe at it with his baseball bat and it would fall back a few feet before going at it again. he'd never admit it, but the strategy was a good one. it'd inflict a small injury on him every time it attacked, leaving him to grow more and more tired and hurt, while it remained unscathed. he had places to be, and this stupid parasite wasn't helping at all. he could hear it coming up behind him, and he swung around, baseball bat at the ready. but . . . it was no where in sight?? where the crap was it?? almost as soon as that thought passed through his head, he was hit. it was perfect and precise, a blow to the head that caused him to fall unconscious. jared crumpled to the ground where he lay, face down in the dirt.
he was an older kid, 15 years old. he had a mess of tangled brown hair and a tan. jared wore a black t-shirt just his size, bearing a skull design in white. he didn't really care for it that much, he liked more simple things, but this was all that fit him at his last foster parents house. he wore normal jeans along with it, and black converse. they were scuffed and beat up, but he didn't care. in fact, most of his stuff was dirty and worn. beside him was a small backpack with the belongings he needed. a tooth brush, tooth paste, a blanket, a wallet full of all the money he'd ever saved, which amounted to around 200 dollars, and in the very bottom, a golden locket. the bat lay at his limp fingertips and his possessions were strewn about due to his surprise collapse. the monster was about to take its prey.
unfortunately for it, jared had wandered down to long island hoping for a forest to shelter in and maybe kill this insufferable beast. what he hadn't know was that he had fallen right near the border of a summer camp for kids just like him.

Amber emerged from her cabin and looked around. She hated coming out, especially during the day, but every once in a while she felt she needed to. She was just about to sit in the grass and start sharpening her dagger when she saw Jared. She rolled her eyes. A new camper? She didn't have any experience dealing with them, as she was fairly new herself, but she went over to him. "Hi. Who are you?" she said, looking him over. She kept her fingers wrapped around the hilt of her dagger as she always did, just in case. Her red hair fell loose at her shoulders and her intense green eyes stared straight at him.

he was dizzy. things were starting to come back a little. he was . . . he didn't know. oh right. the monster. he jumped to his feet and snatched his bat. he swung it at full force, knocking it right across the muzzle of the monster. oh wait. there was someone behind him, wasn't there. "LITTLE HELP, PLEASE?" he yelled, slightly annoyed. good lord, he had been about to be eaten and they were just standing there?? he swung again. curse this horrid bat! well, he didn't have any other weapon to use when he ran away, so a bat had to do.

Amber unsheathed her dagger and circled the creature, mirroring its movements. Every once in a while she would lunge, striking the monster, always returning to her original position. She gestured for Jared to sneak up behind the- thing- and knock it out, all the while continuing her little routine.

he slipped around the back while it was distracted and brought the bat down hard. the monster swayed and fell. he couldn't tell if it was unconscious or dizzy, but either way they could finish it. "you do the honors," he said, gesturing toward her. she had the knife after all.

She flung her dagger with perfect aim, nailing it straight in the heart. The creature seemed to let out a faint grunt before dissolving. She retrieved her weapon, sheathing it again, and turned to the boy. "I'm Amber," she said, starting to walk back across the magical camp borders. "Follow me. Oh, and welcome to Camp Half-Blood."

"nice to meet you amber," he said rather impatiently, gathering his things and stuffing them back in his bag. back turned to her, he quickly slipped on the locket and put it beneath his shirt. he knew now it was no longer safe there. "thanks for the help, but i really should get go-wait, what? camp half-blood?" what on earth was she going on about. he jogged to catch back up to her, and attempted to grab her arm. "slow down, i want some answers! where the heck are we going?" he hadn't entered the boundary yet, and therefore couldn't see it.

She looked down at his hand on her arm and that back at him, an angry fire in her eyes. She hated being touched. After yanking her arm back, she responded (sort of bitterly) "Camp Half-Blood. A camp for demigods. Based on the fact that you were just chased by a monster, I'd say that you were a demigod, so you should probably stay here. Unless you want to die and if you do, be my guest."

he put his hands on his hips, not at all phased by her bitterness. "woah there kid, keep your pants on. i'm just asking questions. and seriously, you're joking. demi-gods? you mean like greek mythology?" he snorted, although part of him couldn't help but feel like maybe she was telling the truth. what else would explain the monsters? but . . . if his dad was a god, his mother wouldn't have died, right? he'd have saved her. he hoped his dad was a good guy. all his life hid mother made excuses for his absence, but as he grew older he couldn't help but feel like it wasn't true; even if all these thoughts were more of an indescribably blob of feelings he couldn't put a name to. he pushed all that away and gave her his best 'i'm not buying your *' face.

She glared at him. "Yes, like greek mythology" she responded coolly. "One of your parents was a greek god and if you don't believe me,then why don't you try and explain what that creature was, hmm?" She crossed her arms and looked at him, waiting to see if he would even try to deny it.

"something viscous that wants to kill me. duh," he said, raising his eyebrows at her. he sighed and tipped his head a little, swinging his backpack over his shoulder. "okay, okay, but i don't see this camp of yours," he muttered.

Sarah approached and looked questioningly at Amber.

he heard foot steps and briefly averted his glaring gaze to spot another girl. good lord, this better not be some sort of girly joke this amber person and her buddies were playing on him. though he doubted it, seeing the way they were both acting.

Amber ignored Sarah, focusing on the new camper. "Yes. A monster that wanted to kill you because you are a demigod," she said slowly, like she was explaining calculus to a todler.

Sarah nodded her agreement. Sometimes it took a while for new people to believe, while others took it in stride. Sometimes it just doesn't seem real.
