The she-cat poked her head out of her den. Empty. She padded out, relieved. This, the middle of the night, was the only time she could afford to relax. Sure, she always acted calm and peaceful, but she was often sort of freaked out. Ever since she became leader, she had wondered how she could manage, and so she decided to keep her same attitude: peaceful and kind. And, surprisingly enough, it had been working pretty well, but as she got older, her mask began to slip away.
But now she could be alone. At peace. She slipped out of camp. The she-cat smiled as she walked, letting the cool night breeze wash over her. It had been so long since she'd done this. Too long. Soon enough, she started running. She ran until her legs ached and her lungs were screaming and finally stopped at a stream. She was just bending down to drink when she heard a rustle in the bushes. She lifted her head calmly to see a dark tom. "Hello," she mewed. He stared at her. "Who are you? What are you doing here?" he asked cautiously. She stood up straighter and smiled at him. "I am Pollenstar, leader of ThunderClan," she replied. "And I think-" she paused to scent the air, "yes. I'm in my territory. So the real question is, what are YOU doing here?" The tom shifted uneasily and as Pollenstar watched, his signaled with his tail. She frowned as about 5 other toms joined him.
The one in front, a large brown tabby, stepped forward. "We are passing through," he replied. She turned to face him. "Well, I'd really appreciate it if you could please leave ThunderClan territory. I know there is a nice, big stretch of free territory a little farther off." The tom smirked. "Why leave? This place," he mewed, gesturing with his tail, "is just what we need. The only problem is you." She looked him over. Probably very strong, maybe 25 moons or so. "I'm not looking for a fight," she replied, trying to keep her voice calm and kind. "I simply ask that you try avoiding our territory."
"No," the tom snarled. His friends stepped closer to him, unsheathing their claws. Pollenstar stayed exactly where she was, hoping that her eyes didn't show her fear. "Look, I'm sure we can come to some sort of peaceful agreement," she suggested, standing up as straight as she could. "Are you?" the tom responded, slowly coming closer, "I'm not so sure." She stayed exactly where she was, refusing to back up. "I don't want to fight you, but I will if I have to," she warned, unsheathing her claws.
"Bring it," the tom hissed, lunging at her. She raked her claws across his sides and he howled. Instantly, all of his friends came to join him in the fight. Pollenstar was hopelessly outnumbered. It was too much for her. Finally, the biggest tom aimed one final blow at Pollenstar's neck and she fell, blood pouring from the wound. Mustering up her last few bits of energy, she hissed, "leave," before going completely limp.
