the boy wasn't sure what he thought of this place. everyone acted like all these monsters and godly parents and even blinking centaurs were totally normal and he should totally believe that this was all real, and it wasn't some sort of hallucination. deep down he knew this place was legit, but his head didn't want to admit it. especially after the way that amber girl acted like he was super dumb for not knowing all this. his pride hurt that she was right and he was wrong, even though that was dumb of him.
jared sat at the hermes table, even though lunch was far over and everyone was back to their usual things. he rested his arms on the table and hung his head, starting at his arms, lost in thought. what if he never got claimed? all the other unclaimed campers were little pipsqueaks, as they were under thirteen. he'd heard there was some rule that gods had to claim their children by 13. well, he was two years over that limit. what if his dad didn't want him? his stomach did an uncomfortable twist - he had no where to go, nothing to do with his life. he'd be hunted by monsters even more fervently now that he knew what he was. lifted his hands and ran them through his hair, obviously distressed.

Sarah approached him, moving to stand in front of him. She tilted her head and gave him a questioning gaze. "You alright?" She asked, her voice surprisingly kind and soft, contrasting with her appearance. She still had a knife in her hand from practice.

he heard foot-steps and raised his head from his hands, which he let fall against the table. he turned his head slightly to see who it was, and noticed it was that girl who was with amber when he arrived here. he offered a fake smile then turned his head back when she spoke. he was mildly surprised by her tone - he'd expected for her to be all tough, like some of the other people. he guessed that maybe not everyone was a cold-hearted idiot. he turned his head back to face her, looking skeptical. he hesitated a moment, wondering what to tell her. he decided she was only trying to be kind, so he decided to tell the truth. "no," he muttered.

Her eyebrows raised in concern and she took a step closer. Then she realized she was still holding her dagger and she sheathed it. "What's wrong?" She asked quietly.

"i - do i even belong here? seriously, how do you know i'm actually a demi-god?" he demanded. being able to see monsters was one thing, but he couldn't be sure his dad was actually a god. when he was little, before his mother died, there was a photo of his mom and dad, and he looked like an average guy. there was nothing about him that was out of the ordinary. plus, if his dad was a god and really did love his mother, he would've saved her from death, right? he was god, he could totally do that.

Sarah nodded. "Of course you belong here. We know already you're a demigod because a) a monster was chasing you. You could see it through the Mist, which means you are probably a demigod. Plus, the fact you were being chased by the monster in the first place means you have the aura of a demigod, and then b) you made it past camp boundaries. Only demigods can get through the magic border, unless you have permission from somebody inside camp," she said matter-of-factly.

he thought for a moment, trying to find a loop-hole in her words. when he found none, he sighed and put his face in his arms. "i wish my dad would just claim me already," he said, his voice muffled through his arms. he was being a pouty child in front of a stranger - that was really embarrassing, but he had a feeling she'd understand.

"You'll probably be claimed today or tonight." Sarah looked at him, analyzing. "If you want, we could try to figure out who your fatheris," she suggested.

he frowned. "Fine. Whatever you say." he muttered, not quite believing her. At her qiestion he shook his head. "Nah, I dont think thatd make me feel very good," he admitted. something about that seemed off to him.

Sarah tilted her head but said nothing. She just nodded. Sarah sat down at the other side of the table, thinking. She had a couple ideas to who his father was, but wasn't completely sure. "Well, usually most people are claimed within a day of arriving," she finally said.

he lifted his head. "really?" he wouldn't mind being chosen pretty soon. he wanted to get settled in his own cabin instead of staying with a bunch of people who probably weren't his siblings.

She nodded. "Do you want a tour of the camp? Or have you already had one?" She asked.

"a tour would be great," he said, offering a grin to her and swinging his legs off the bench before hopping to his feet.

Sarah stood as well and began to lead him away from the dining pavilion. "How much do you know about Greek mythology?" She asked.

he thought for a moment. "zilch, pretty much." he said honestly. he never really learned that sorta stuff in school. or maybe it was because he changed schools like every week, so he didn't get a very solid education. probably the latter.
