a young girl about three toddles uneasily into the comfortable living room. her large, wide eyes are a clear, deep blue. her honey-blonde hair cascades down her back, ending halfway above her waist. her mother on the push couch watching television. brooklyn is dyslexic and very young, or she could have seen that it read 'gods of ancient greece.' her mom is looking at it with a wistful expression and says to the toddler, "my little brooklyn, my brooke. one day you, like the water you were named for, will return to the sea."
now brooke, as she likes to be called, is nine. she hoists her backpack up and walks into her classroom uneasily. she tends to get in trouble, and this is her third school. when she is cornered by a bully, her tormentor falls into a puddle and tells the teacher he was pushed.
now brooke is running for her life. there is a giant... manticore? behind her and she is sprinting through the strawberries, waist-long hair flying in all directions. her blue eyes are wide and scared when she reaches a field. she feels something hit her in the back. then the twelve year old sees a rusty bronze knife and throws it at the beasts head. with a howl, it explodes into dust. then the world went dark.

Sarah heard a commotion and sprinted to the strawberry field, knives in hand just in case. Noticing the girl lying in the field, she sprinted over. She knelt beside the girl, feeling her pulse. Sarah tilted her head, deciding that the girl was unconscious, and she stood. Sarah snapped her fingers in front of the girl's face to attempt to wake her.

brooklyn stirred and rolled over. "where am i?" she said, brushing dirty blonde hair out of her face.

"Welcome to camp," she announced as the cabins came into view. "So. I'll keep this simple. Camp Half-Blood is a training camp for demigods; people with one godly parent and one mortal parent. Gods being from Greek mythology. How much Greek Mythology do you know?" Sarah asked, attempting not to confuse the girl.

Sarah tipped her head and gave a small nod. "If you know your mother is mortal, then yes. Your father was a god."

Sarah nodded. "At first it might be hard to believe. But you get used to it," she said.
